2 Samuel 19:1 (AKJV) American King James Version

1 And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Absalom.
2 And the victory that day was turned into mourning to all the people: for the people heard say that day how the king was grieved for his son.
3 And the people got them by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.
4 But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!
5 And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, You have shamed this day the faces of all your servants, which this day have saved your life, and the lives of your sons and of your daughters, and the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines;
6 In that you love your enemies, and hate your friends. For you have declared this day, that you regard neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased you well.
7 Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably to your servants: for I swear by the LORD, if you go not forth, there will not tarry one with you this night: and that will be worse to you than all the evil that befell you from your youth until now.
8 Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told to all the people, saying, Behold, the king does sit in the gate. And all the people came before the king: for Israel had fled every man to his tent.
9 And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land for Absalom.
10 And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak you not a word of bringing the king back?
11 And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak to the elders of Judah, saying, Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house.
12 You are my brothers, you are my bones and my flesh: why then are you the last to bring back the king?
13 And say you to Amasa, Are you not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if you be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.
14 And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word to the king, Return you, and all your servants.
15 So the king returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan.
16 And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hurried and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.
17 And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king.
18 And there went over a ferry boat to carry over the king's household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he was come over Jordan;
19 And said to the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity to me, neither do you remember that which your servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.
20 For your servant does know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.
21 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD's anointed?
22 And David said, What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should this day be adversaries to me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?
23 Therefore the king said to Shimei, You shall not die. And the king swore to him.
24 And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.
25 And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, Why went not you with me, Mephibosheth?
26 And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for your servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go to the king; because your servant is lame.
27 And he has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in your eyes.
28 For all of my father's house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet did you set your servant among them that did eat at your own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more to the king?
29 And the king said to him, Why speak you any more of your matters? I have said, You and Ziba divide the land.
30 And Mephibosheth said to the king, Yes, let him take all, for as much as my lord the king is come again in peace to his own house.
31 And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.
32 Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.
33 And the king said to Barzillai, Come you over with me, and I will feed you with me in Jerusalem.
34 And Barzillai said to the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?
35 I am this day fourscore years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? why then should your servant be yet a burden to my lord the king?
36 Your servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?
37 Let your servant, I pray you, turn back again, that I may die in my own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold your servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good to you.
38 And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good to you: and whatever you shall require of me, that will I do for you.
39 And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king was come over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned to his own place.
40 Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.
41 And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to the king, Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David's men with him, over Jordan?
42 And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: why then be you angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king's cost? or has he given us any gift?
43 And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than you: why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

3 And the people H5971 got H935 L-VQFC them by stealth H1589 that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS into the city H5892 D-GFS , as H834 K-RPRO people H5971 being ashamed H3637 steal away H1589 when they flee H5127 in battle H4421 .
4 But the king H4428 covered H3813 his face H6440 CMP-3MS , and the king H4428 D-NMS cried H2199 with a loud H1419 AMS voice H6963 CMS , O my son H1121 NMS-1MS Absalom H53 , O Absalom H53 , my son H1121 NMS-1MS , my son H1121 NMS-1MS !
5 And Joab H3097 came H935 W-VQY3MS into the house H1004 to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thou hast shamed H3001 this day H3117 D-AMS the faces H6440 CMP of all H3605 CMS thy servants H5650 , which this day H3117 D-AMS have saved H4422 thy life H5315 GFS , and the lives H5315 GFS of thy sons H1121 CMP-2MS and of thy daughters H1323 , and the lives H5315 GFS of thy wives H802 , and the lives H5315 GFS of thy concubines H6370 ;
6 In that thou lovest H157 thine enemies H8130 VQCMP-2MS , and hatest H8130 thy friends H157 . For H3588 CONJ thou hast declared H5046 VHQ2MS this day H3117 D-AMS , that H3588 CONJ thou regardest neither H369 NPAR princes H8269 NMP nor servants H5650 W-NMP : for H3588 CONJ this day H3117 D-AMS I perceive H3045 VQY1MS , that H3588 CONJ if H3863 Absalom H53 had lived H2416 AMS , and all H3605 we had died H4191 this day H3117 D-AMS , then H227 ADV it had pleased thee well H5869 .
7 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore arise H6965 VQI2MS , go forth H3318 VQI2MS , and speak H1696 comfortably H3820 NMS unto thy servants H5650 : for H3588 CONJ I swear H7650 by the LORD H3068 , if H3588 CONJ thou go not forth , there will not H518 PART tarry H3885 VQY3MS one H376 NMS with H854 PART-2MS thee this night H3915 D-AMS : and that H2063 DPRO will be worse H7489 unto thee than all H3605 M-CMS the evil H7451 that H834 RPRO befell H935 VQQ3FS thee from thy youth H5271 until H5704 PREP now H6258 .
8 Then the king H4428 D-NMS arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and sat H3427 W-VQY3MS in the gate H8179 . And they told H5046 unto all H3605 WL-CMS the people H5971 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Behold H2009 IJEC , the king H4428 D-NMS doth sit H3427 VQPMS in the gate H8179 . And all H3605 CMS the people H5971 came H935 W-VQY3MS before H6440 L-CMP the king H4428 D-NMS : for Israel H3478 had fled H5127 every man H376 NMS to his tent H168 .
9 And all H3605 CMS the people H5971 were H1961 W-VQY3MS at strife H1777 throughout all H3605 B-CMS the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 , saying H559 L-VQFC , The king H4428 D-NMS saved H5337 us out of the hand H3709 M-CFS of our enemies H341 , and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS delivered H4422 us out of the hand H3709 M-CFS of the Philistines H6430 TMS ; and now H6258 W-ADV he is fled H1272 out of H4480 PREP the land H776 D-GFS for M-PREP Absalom H53 .
10 And Absalom H53 , whom H834 RPRO we anointed H4886 over H5921 PREP-1MP us , is dead H4191 in battle H4421 . Now H6258 W-ADV therefore why H4100 L-IGAT speak H2790 ye H859 PPRO-2MS not a word of bringing H7725 L-VHFC the king H4428 back ?
11 And king H4428 David H1732 MMS sent H7971 VQQ3MS to H413 PREP Zadok H6659 and to H413 PREP Abiathar H54 the priests H3548 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Speak H1696 unto H413 PREP the elders H2205 of Judah H3063 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Why H4100 L-IPRO are H1961 ye the last H314 to bring H7725 L-VHFC the king H4428 D-NMS back to H413 PREP his house H1004 NMS-3MS ? seeing the speech H1697 W-CMS of all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 is come H935 VQPMS to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , even to H413 PREP his house H1004 CMS-3MS .
12 Ye H859 PPRO-2MS are my brethren H251 NMP-1MS , ye H859 PPRO-2MS are my bones H6106 CFS-1MS and my flesh H1320 : wherefore H4100 WL-IGAT then are H1961 ye the last H314 AMP to bring back H7725 L-VHFC the king H4428 ?
13 And say H559 ye to Amasa H6021 , Art thou H859 PPRO-2MS not H3808 ADV of my bone H6106 CFS-1MS , and of my flesh H1320 ? God H430 EDP do H6213 so H3541 to me , and more H3254 also H3541 , if H518 PART thou be H1961 VQY3FS not H3808 NADV captain H8269 of the host H6635 NMS before H6440 L-CMP me continually H3605 NMS in the room H8478 NMS of Joab H3097 .
14 And he bowed H5186 the heart H3824 of all H3605 NMS the men H376 NMS of Judah H3063 , even as the heart of one H259 MMS man H376 NMS ; so that they sent H7971 this word unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , Return H7725 VQFC thou H859 PPRO-2MS , and all H3605 NMS thy servants H5650 .
15 So the king H4428 D-NMS returned H7725 , and came H935 W-VQY3MS to H5704 PREP Jordan H3383 D-EFS . And Judah H3063 came H935 VQPMS to Gilgal H1537 , to go H1980 L-VQFC to meet H7125 L-VQFC the king H4428 D-NMS , to conduct the king over H5674 Jordan H3383 .
16 And Shimei H8096 the son H1121 CMS of Gera H1617 , a Benjamite H1145 , which H834 RPRO was of Bahurim H980 , hasted H4116 and came down H3381 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP the men H376 NMS of Judah H3063 to meet H7125 L-VQFC king H4428 D-NMS David H1732 .
17 And there were a thousand H505 W-BMS men H376 NMS of Benjamin H1144 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , and Ziba H6717 the servant H5288 of the house H1004 CMS of Saul H7586 , and his fifteen H2568 sons H1121 CMP-3MS and his twenty H6242 W-MMP servants H5650 with H854 PREP-3MS him ; and they went over H6743 Jordan H3383 D-EFS before H6440 L-CMP the king H4428 .
18 And there went over H5674 a ferry boat H5679 to carry over H5674 the king H4428 D-NMS \'s household H1004 CMS , and to do H6213 what he thought H5869 good H2896 D-NMS . And Shimei H8096 the son H1121 CMS of Gera H1617 fell down H5307 before H6440 L-CMP the king H4428 D-NMS , as he was come over H5674 Jordan H3383 ;
19 And said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , Let not H408 NPAR my lord H113 impute H2803 iniquity H5771 NMS unto me , neither H408 ADV do thou remember H2142 that which H834 RPRO thy servant H5650 did perversely H5753 the day H3117 B-AMS that H834 RPRO my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS went out H3318 VQQ3MS of Jerusalem H3389 , that the king H4428 D-NMS should take H7760 L-VQFC it to H413 PREP his heart H3820 CMS-3MS .
20 For H3588 CONJ thy servant H5650 doth know H3045 VQQ3MS that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS have sinned H2398 VQQ1MS : therefore , behold H2009 , I am come H935 the first H7223 this day H3117 D-AMS of all H3605 L-CMS the house H1004 CMS of Joseph H3130 to go down H3381 to meet H7125 L-VQFC my lord H113 the king H4428 .
21 But Abishai H52 the son H1121 of Zeruiah H6870 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Shall not H3808 NADV Shimei H8096 be put to death H4191 for H8478 this H2063 DPRO , because H3588 CONJ he cursed H7043 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS \'s anointed H4899 ?
22 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IPRO have I to do with you , ye sons H1121 of Zeruiah H6870 , that H3588 CONJ ye should this day H3117 D-AMS be H1961 adversaries H7854 unto me ? shall there any man H376 NMS be put to death H4191 this day H3117 D-AMS in Israel H3478 ? for H3588 CONJ do not H3808 D-NPAR I know H3045 VQY1MS that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am this day H3117 D-AMS king H4428 NMS over H5921 PREP Israel H3478 LMS ?
23 Therefore the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Shimei H8096 , Thou shalt not H3808 NADV die H4191 . And the king H4428 swore H7650 unto him .
24 And Mephibosheth H4648 the son H1121 of Saul H7586 came down H3381 VQQ3MS to meet H7125 L-VQFC the king H4428 D-NMS , and had neither H3808 W-NPAR dressed H6213 VQQ3MS his feet H7272 , nor H3808 W-NPAR trimmed H6213 VQQ3MS his beard H8222 , nor H3808 W-NPAR washed H3526 his clothes H899 , from H4480 the day H3117 D-AMS the king H4428 D-NMS departed H1980 until H5704 PREP the day H3117 D-AMS he came H935 VQPMS again in peace H7965 .
25 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when H3588 CONJ he was come H935 to Jerusalem H3389 to meet H7125 L-VQFC the king H4428 D-NMS , that the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO wentest H1980 not H3808 NADV thou with H5973 me , Mephibosheth H4648 ?
26 And he answered H559 W-VQY3MS , My lord H113 , O king H4428 D-NMS , my servant H5650 CMS-1MS deceived H7411 me : for H3588 CONJ thy servant H5650 said H559 VQQ3MS , I will saddle H2280 me an ass H2543 , that I may ride H7392 thereon H5921 PREP-3FS , and go H1980 to H854 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS ; because H3588 CONJ thy servant H5650 is lame H6455 .
27 And he hath slandered H7270 thy servant H5650 unto H413 PREP my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS ; but my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS is as an angel H4397 of God H430 D-EDP : do H6213 therefore what is good H2896 D-NMS in thine eyes H5869 .
28 For H3588 CONJ all H3605 NMS of my father H1 CMS-1MS \'s house H1004 CMS were H1961 VQQ3MS but H518 PART dead H4194 NMS men H376 CMP before H6440 my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS : yet didst thou set H7896 thy servant H5650 among them that did eat H398 at thine own table H7979 . What H4100 W-IPRO right H6666 NFS therefore have H3426 I yet H5759 to cry H2199 any more H5750 ADV unto H413 PREP the king H4428 ?
29 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Why H4100 L-IPRO speakest H1696 thou any more H5750 ADV of thy matters H1697 ? I have said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thou H859 PPRO-2MS and Ziba H6717 divide H2505 the land H7704 D-NMS .
30 And Mephibosheth H4648 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , Yea H1571 CONJ , let him take H3947 all H3605 , forasmuch H310 PREP as my lord H113 the king H4428 is come again H935 VQPMS in peace H7965 unto H413 PREP his own house H1004 CMS-3MS .
31 And Barzillai H1271 the Gileadite H1569 came down H3381 VQQ3MS from Rogelim H7274 , and went over H5674 W-VQY3MS Jordan H3383 D-EFS with H854 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , to conduct him over H7971 Jordan H3383 .
32 Now Barzillai H1271 was a very H3966 ADV aged H2204 man , even fourscore H8084 years H8141 NFS old H1121 : and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS had provided the king H4428 D-NMS of sustenance H3557 while he lay H7871 at Mahanaim H4266 ; for H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS was a very H3966 ADV great H1419 AMS man H376 NMS .
33 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Barzillai H1271 , Come H5674 thou H859 PPRO-2MS over with H854 PREP-1MS me , and I will feed H3557 thee with H5973 me in Jerusalem H3389 .
34 And Barzillai H1271 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , How H4100 K-IGAT long H3117 CMP have I to live H2416 CMS-1MS , that H3588 CONJ I should go up H5927 with H854 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS unto Jerusalem H3389 ?
35 I H595 PPRO-1MS am this day H3117 D-AMS fourscore H8084 years H8141 NFS old H1121 : and can I discern H3045 between H996 PREP good H2896 AMS and evil H7451 ? can H518 PART thy servant H5650 taste H2938 VQY3MS what H834 RPRO I eat H398 or what H834 RPRO I drink H8354 ? can H518 PART I hear H8085 any more H5750 ADV the voice H6963 B-NMS of singing men H7891 and singing women H7891 ? wherefore H4100 WL-IGAT then should thy servant H5650 be H1961 VQY3MS yet H5750 ADV a burden H4853 unto H413 PREP my lord H113 the king H4428 ?
36 Thy servant H5650 will go a little way over H5674 VQY3MS Jordan H3383 D-EFS with H854 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS : and why H4100 WL-IGAT should the king H4428 D-NMS recompense H1580 it me with such H2063 a reward H1578 ?
37 Let thy servant H5650 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , turn back again H7725 , that I may die H4191 in mine own city H5892 , and be buried by H5973 PREP the grave H6913 of my father H1 CMS-1MS and of my mother H517 . But behold H2009 IJEC thy servant H5650 Chimham H3643 ; let him go over H5674 with H5973 PREP my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS ; and do H6213 to him what H834 RPRO shall seem H5869 good H2896 AMS unto thee .
38 And the king H4428 D-NMS answered H559 W-VQY3MS , Chimham H3643 shall go over H5674 VQY3MS with H854 PREP-1MS me , and I H589 W-PPRO-1MS will do H6213 to him that which shall seem H5869 good H2896 D-NMS unto thee : and whatsoever H834 RPRO thou shalt require H977 of H5921 PREP-1MS me , that will I do H6213 VQY1MS for thee .
39 And all H3605 NMS the people H5971 went over H5674 W-VQY3MS Jordan H3383 D-EFS . And when the king H4428 was come over H5674 , the king H4428 D-NMS kissed H5401 Barzillai H1271 , and blessed H1288 him ; and he returned H7725 unto his own place H4725 .
40 Then the king H4428 D-NMS went on H5674 W-VQY3MS to Gilgal H1537 , and Chimham H3643 went on H5674 VQQ3MS with H5973 PREP-3MS him : and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 NMS of Judah H3063 conducted H5674 the king H4428 D-NMS , and also H1571 W-CONJ half H2677 the people H5971 NMS of Israel H3478 LMS .
41 And , behold H2009 IJEC , all H3605 NMS the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 came H935 to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , Why H4069 IPRO have our brethren H251 the men H376 NMS of Judah H3063 stolen thee away H1589 , and have brought H5674 the king H4428 D-NMS , and his household H1004 NMS-3MS , and all H3605 NMS David H1732 \'s men H376 NMS with H5973 PREP-3MS him , over Jordan H3383 D-EFS ?
42 And all H3605 NMS the men H376 NMS of Judah H3063 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 , Because H3588 CONJ the king H4428 D-NMS is near of kin H7138 AMS to H413 PREP-1MS us : wherefore H4100 WL-IGAT then be ye angry H2734 VQQ3MS for H5921 PREP this H2088 PMS matter H1697 D-NMS ? have we eaten at all H398 of H4480 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS \'s cost ? or H518 PART hath he given us any gift H5379 ?
43 And the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS the men H376 NMS of Judah H3063 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , We have ten H6235 parts H3027 in the king H4428 , and we H589 PPRO-1MS have also H1571 W-CONJ more right in David H1732 than H4480 PREP ye : why H4069 then did ye despise H7043 us , that our advice H1697 CMS-1MS should not H3808 W-NPAR be H1961 VQQ3MS first H7223 had in bringing back H7725 L-VHFC our king H4428 ? And the words H1697 CMS of the men H376 NMS of Judah H3063 were fiercer H7185 than the words H1697 of the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 LMS .
